ADB approves $15.2m solar project for Solomon Islands

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved financing to support the Government of Solomon Islands and Solomon Power to convert electricity networks in five provinces to mostly solar power. The Solar Power Development Project will be funded by a $2.24m grant from the ADB, $6.2m from the Strategic Climate Fund, and $6.76m from the government.

The project will be the first solar power project in the Solomon Islands to install battery storage and will reduce the need for costly shipments of diesel to provincial centres. Two megawatt of solar power generation capacity will be installed within or near the townships of Kirakira, Lata, Malu’u, Munda, and Tulagi. Being part of a broader program by Solomon Power, the project will expand electricity access to rural communities through renewable energy-based grids.
