Trailblazing storage project leads the way to low-carbon future

A trial of the largest grid-scale battery in the UK has proved it can potentially transform the energy grid and play a key role in the move towards a low-carbon economy. Designed and run by Bedfordshire-based UK Power Networks, the 6MW/10MWh battery stores energy when demand is low and releases it at peak times. The battery, which is the size of three tennis courts, was trialled for two years in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

The Smarter Network Storage project was funded from the Low Carbon Networks Fund for £13.2m, administered by Ofgem, with £4m from UK Power Networks and £1.2m from other partners and institutions.
