The Smart Community Summit 2018 focused on “Realizing the Renewable Energy Best Solution”
On June 13, the Japan Smart Community Alliance (JSCA) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) co-hosted the Smart Community Summit 2018 in Tokyo. Power system experts from the United States, Germany, and Japan gave lectures in the “Perspective of Renewable Energy Introduction Beyond the Limit of Grid” session, and experts in the EV and charging standards fields also shared up-to-date information and exchanged opinions through a series of lectures and a panel discussion in the “EV Values and Possibilities in the Grid” session.

Session 1: Perspective of Renewable Energy Introduction Beyond the Limit of Grid
The first session focused on “Perspective of Renewable Energy Introduction Beyond the Limit of Grid.” In the first lecture, Dr. Iwamoto, professor emeritus of Waseda University, described the challenges facing Japan’s electric power systems and their future prospects. In the second lecture, Mr. Bühring, managing director of Stadtwerke Speyer GmbH (SWS), explained the German energy market structure and possible problems concerning SWS energy business from the standpoint of a public utility and also introduced NEDO’s demonstration project in Speyer aimed at building a local energy production and consumption model smart community. The third lecture, given by Mr. Lee, president of PXiSE Energy Solutions and vice president of Sempra Infrastructure LLC (subsidiary of Sempra Energy, a U.S. utility supplying electricity mainly to California and Texas), provided an introduction to power system control using phasor measurement units (PMUs), a newly developed technology for distribution grid management, and examples of practical applications.
Session 2: EV Values and Possibilities in the Grid
The second session “EV Values and Possibilities in the Grid” covered one of the hottest topics in energy: connecting vehicles to the grid via homes and buildings. Japan’s leading experts in this field provided the latest information on V2H and V2B technology development and pioneering demonstration projects. After a presentation about NEDO’s EV-related international demonstration projects and plan for wider EV adoption, Mr. Horie, general manager at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., illustrated the company’s vehicle electrification strategy and the social benefits of EVs, and Mr. Anegawa, the president of TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) Research Institute, explained the major trends in EV fast charging standards and TEPCO’s EV infrastructure deployment strategy.
The presentations were followed by a panel discussion, where panelists discussed various issues in response to questions from the audience.
At the end of the summit, Mr. Omote, vice chair of GSGF and secretary general of JSCA, gave closing remarks. All through the conference the hall was filled with attendees, who actively asked questions, and the summit ended successfully.
